Injectable Fillers
“Fillers” are injectable materials used to temporarily improve facial appearance by adding volume, often restoring volume lost with age, and reducing skin lines. Most soft tissue fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid which is a substance that also occurs naturally in the body. Common areas of treatment are the cheeks, nasolabial folds, corners of the mouth, marionette lines (grooves extending down from the corners of the mouth), and jaw line. They can also be used to fill in scars from acne or other causes.
There are a variety of fillers available that differ in composition, indications, and duration. New trends in soft tissue fillers are formulations with more cross linkage so that they last longer, up to one to two years. Also, some new fillers are formulated to meet specific needs. For example, Juvéderm Volbella® and Restylane Silk® are thinner preparations designed for treatment of fine, superficial skin lines, especially the lip lines. Juvéderm Vollure® is useful for treatment of skin lines and depressions in the area around the mouth where added volume is not desirable. Juvéderm Voluma® and Restylane Lyft® provide maximum support and volume and are often used for the cheeks and nasolabial folds. Juvéderm Ultra Plus® is a soft, gel-like filler that works nicely for adding volume to the lips. Restylane® is a well-established filler that is both versatile and cost-effective.
