Dermaplaning is a method of facial exfoliation that uses a sterile surgical blade to remove the top layer of dulling dead skin cells and facial hair. This reveals a smoother and brighter complexion immediately. Most skin types will benefit from dermaplaning which encourages faster cellular turnover and stimulates new collagen growth. Dermaplaning should be avoided if you are experiencing current inflamed acne lesions, active cold sores or open skin lesions.
You are a good candidate for Dermaplaning if you would like:
:: smoother skin
:: fine lines diminished
:: removal of fine facial hair (vellus hair)
:: a procedure with no downtime
Office procedure: You will clean your face with soap and water. Additional cleansing will be done with an alpha-hydroxy acid facial wash. A toner will remove any trapped dirt and oil to prepare the skin. A sterile surgical blade will be used to remove the top layer of dulling dead skin cells and fine facial hair. The procedure takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
What to expect with treatment: You may experience slight redness and your face may be sensitive for a day or so afterwards. Your skin will feel noticeably smoother. After your procedure it is important to use a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher to reduce risks from sun exposure and possible hyperpigmentation. Most patients have dermaplaning once a month, but it can be done every 2-3 weeks if you prefer.
Q: Do I have to stop Retin-A before this procedure?
A: No, you are not required to stop Retin-A.
Q: Will my hair grow back thicker and darker?
A: No, dermaplaning will not alter your natural hair growth.
Q: Can I have another procedure done after dermaplaning?
A: Yes, dermaplaning can actually prepare the skin for other procedures, such as a chemical peel.
Q: Can other areas be treated?
A: Dermaplaning is only done on the face.
Q: Can I wear makeup after my procedure?
A: Yes, you may wear makeup after dermaplaning.
Q: What is the difference between dermaplaning and microdermabrasion?
A: Dermaplaning removes vellus hair (peach fuzz) and dead skin cells from the skin. Microdermabrasion also exfoliates the surface of the skin, but not as thoroughly or deeply as dermaplaning does.
