Microneedling with SkinPen®

Microneedling, also known as percutaneous collagen induction therapy, is used for skin rejuvenation as well as treatment of acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, and reduction of enlarged pores. Multiple microneedles penetrate the skin, creating tiny vertical channels, which trigger the release of growth factors and stimulate collagen production. Reorganization of collagen fibers through wound healing mechanisms result in a significant improvement in skin texture.

The SkinPen® Microneedling system that we use is the first microneedling device to receive Class 2 medical grade FDA clearance. We combine microneedling treatments with postprocedure use of vitamin C and vitamin A creams to aid in collagen production and turnover. The most effective results are obtained with 3 or more treatments depending on the area treated.

You may be a good candidate for Microneedling if you have any of the following skin issues:

:: photo-aged or sun-damaged skin

:: fine lines or wrinkles

:: hyperpigmentation

:: acne scars

:: skin laxity or decreased skin tone

Office procedure: You will be asked to wash your face with a gentle cleanser, then a topical anesthetic cream will be applied. After allowing the numbing cream to work, our registered nurse will cleanse your face and apply a thin layer of Hydroglide gel. Several passes will be made over the treatment areas using the Microneedling device. You may feel a light pressure or scratching sensation as the SkinPen® moves over your face.

After treatment: Immediately following your Microneedling treatment, your skin will appear pink like a sunburn and may feel tight and sensitive. This may last a couple of days. The provided Hydrogel moisturizer will help to hydrate your skin and minimize redness. For the first 24 hours, you will only use this product. Avoid sun exposure and sweat-producing exercises during this time. After 24 hours, a good moisturizer every 2 to 3 hours will keep the skin soft and hydrated. You will begin use of a vitamin C cream and we recommend using a sunscreen with SPF of 15 or greater. You may also wear makeup after 24 hours. Often a mineral-based powder will conceal better and is easier to apply and remove. After 48 hours, add a vitamin A cream to your evening regimen. The vitamin C and vitamin A containing products help to maximize dermal collagen formation. Additional improvement is noted with each subsequent Microneedling treatment and to achieve your optimal skin goal, a series of 3 to 6 treatments may be needed.

Q&A:

Q: I’m interested in Microneedling but I’m not sure I understand how it works?

A: The Microneedling device creates tiny needle wounds in your skin. Your body responds to the wounds by releasing growth factors and producing collagen. As a result, your skin becomes thicker and smoother in appearance.

Q: What can I expect after a Microneedling treatment?

A: You may have some redness immediately following your treatment, similar to a sunburn. This will subside within a day or two. You may notice peeling after about 3 to 5 days which may last up to one week.

Q: Can Microneedling help acne scars?

A: Microneedling helps to improve the appearance of acne scars by creating microchannels which stimulate the production of collagen and elastin with a more regular collagen bundle pattern than the original scar.

Q: Does Microneedling help neck skin?

A: Microneedling can help to soften fine lines and wrinkles in the neck, lighten areas of hyperpigmentation and improve skin tone. We recommend a series of 3 or more treatments to enhance your results. The SkinPen® Microneedling device we use has been FDA-cleared for treatment of wrinkles of the neck.

Q: Is Microneedling painful?

A: A topical numbing cream is applied prior to your treatment to help minimize any discomfort.
